Warning: Some Spoilers below:
I've read a few reviews of this game after I beat it and I both agree and disagree with them. The game is definitely a bold new take on the Metroid franchise and I applaud them for actually giving a Nintendo character an actual voice and personality. As many have already said, her personality in Metroid: Other M is a bit displaced. By this point in the Metroid timeline she should be a weathered warrior and fearless bounty hunter so some of the decisions made in the storyline were a bit baffling.
Character flaws aside, the game plays great. I was skeptical about the single Wii-mote control scheme, but it becomes natural after an hour or two. Ideally the player should be allowed to move around in both third and first person views but that was omitted from the game sadly. The joy of pumping enemies full of missiles is not to be found in this game, as you can only fire one off at a time in first person view. Neither present, are the large open environments of the Metroid Prime series. Yet somehow the game, although mostly linear, is good enough in its own unique ways and succeeds at both developing a storyline and at the same time dealing out a good dose of action. She moves just like she used to in Super Metroid and it is very satisfying to be able to control her in third person in full 3D (although the game tends to prefer a 2D layout). I think every fan of the series has secretly wanted to try out her Speed Booster in 3D and with this game, you can make that a reality.
As others said, it is unfortunate that there are no real "powerups" to be found, as she already has everything in her arsenal albeit in a deactivated state. I think the game makes up for most of its shortcomings by impressing with pure action (which Team Ninja is known for). I am very curious to see where Nintendo decides to take Samus on her next outing. I am seriously hoping for a return to the adventure/exploration/powering up of the old games while still retaining heavy action. Maybe Ridley can sit out on the next one as well, though I admit, battling him is always a satisfying experience.
