Sonic is sure versatile. Whatever Sega needs him to do, it can work without seeming absurd. Tennis player, racer, lycanthrope*, hoverboarder, olympic athlete- It all makes sense some how. If only gameplay was as reliably good.
The game Sonic Unleashed, a game where Sonic is hedgehog by day and beast-like where-hog by night, had one major flaw- hlaf of it was way too slow. Sonic and the black knight represents little improvement by all of it being a bit too slow. Here are the pros and cons that I found influential.
Pros.
1. Graphics. Just ask anyone else: the gameplay graphics are good, but the cutscenes are cheesy. They are a series of still images apparently supposed to look like a storybook. At that it succeds, but I still prefer the standard format of the opening cutscene: normal animation.
Cons.
1. Speed. The characters' top speed and accelaration are both just too slow for a Sonic fan's liking. Since Sonic's main attraction is his speed, this is already a serious problem, but sadly I'm just warming up. In addition, every time you slash, you lose a lot of speed. (Sir Percival AKA Blaze even has to stop to attack!) Because each level is so heavily saturated with enemies, you will rarely be at top speed.
2. Difficulty. This game is hard, but in just the wrong way. It's not hard in that practice makes perfect. It's hard in that most mistakes will result in a death. You have unlimited lives, but the problem is that each time you die, you are set back rediculously far, so you don't get much chance at practicing the part you keep messing up in!
3. Character Selection. For a brief part of the story, Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow and Blaze all team up, and you get your choice of them for a while. However, when going back and replaying the levels, you only get the other characters on the levels where they were available in story mode! An obvious flaw. Any other character in the game, from 'Tails' as the blacksmith to 'Silver' as Sir Gawain and 'Jet' as another knight (I don't know who), is only available in battle mode. It's fun, but you need two people: you can't battle via wi-fi connection.
All In all, it's an OK game with a clever idea and a story that would be immersive if it didn't go so fast. Just a few obvious and glaring flaws are what loses this game what so much good work did for it: Namely, a five-star review.
*Lycanthrope- someone who turns into a wherewolf at night.
